We deliver a 360-degree approach to LFG management.

Services:
We deliver a 360-degree approach to LFG management. From feasibility to design, our services aim for zero-emission landfill operations.
Consulting & Engineering
We offer a holistic approach to LFG management through our Consulting Engineering Services. From initial feasibility studies to detailed design and permitting, our solutions are tailored to align with our mission of zero-emission landfill operation.
Our company provides in-depth feasibility studies to determine the viability of landfill gas collection and treatment systems tailored to each project site. We consider critical factors such as landfill size, location, waste composition, and age to assess the potential for effective gas capture and treatment. We assist landfill owners to implement a gas management system to control odors, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and address other environmental, health, and safety concerns.
Our studies can also evaluate alternative strategies, such as biocover application, for managing landfill gas emissions. Biocover systems, created from organic materials like biosolids and compost, support the growth of methanotrophic bacteria, which consume methane and convert it to carbon dioxide—a far less potent GHG. With our expert analyses of technical, environmental, and economic factors, we empower clients to make informed decisions for sustainable, effective landfill gas management solutions.
We prepare conceptual designs for landfill gas and condensate management systems that are tailored to site specific conditions such as landfill cover system, leachate management system, and site grading.
We provide detailed design services for every aspect of landfill gas and condensate management systems, fully customized to each site’s unique conditions. Our landfill gas collection systems are engineered to maximize both collection efficiency and combustion effectiveness. With extensive experience in both active and passive gas collection system design, we tailor solutions to suit each client’s needs. Passive systems leverage the landfill’s natural pressure and gas concentration gradients to vent gas safely, while active systems employ strategically placed vertical and horizontal wells operating under vacuum to effectively draw gas from the landfill and prevent migration. Our designs ensure robust, reliable performance that meets environmental standards and enhances site sustainability.
We support our clients in securing essential permits and approvals for a wide range of landfill gas projects, navigating regulatory requirements to keep projects on track. Our team also offers comprehensive reporting services, including the preparation of annual reports, to ensure full compliance with regulations. With our expertise, clients can meet all permitting and reporting requirements with confidence.
Compliance Review
Have you conducted a compliance review with respect to the NEW Federal Landfill Gas Regulation?
At MethaneXE, we offer comprehensive services tailored to keep you in full compliance with both provincial and the federal LFG regulations. Our expertise extends beyond regulatory adherence to encompass the critical areas of health and safety and environmental monitoring. We utilize state-of-the-art methods and our patented Surface Scan Emission Quantification Technique (SSEQT) technique to provide accurate emission quantification, ensuring that your landfill operation not only meets but exceeds environmental and safety standards. With our guidance, you can navigate the intricate landscape of LFG management regulations with confidence, ensuring a safer and more sustainable operation.
We use advanced LFG generation modelling to estimate GHG emissions, to size collection systems, and to determine the feasibility of LFG utilization projects. At MethaneXE, advanced LFG generation modelling is performed via the UBCiModel©. The UBCiModel was developed in 2012 after a comprehensive 6-year research study completed by Dr. Abedini at the Vancouver Landfill, the largest MSW landfill in British Columbia, Canada. Utilizing the model in more than 100 landfill projects within Canada and internationally, the UBCiModel© is now known as one of the most powerful LFG generation models available in the industry. As opposed to assigning a fixed methane yield to MSW, this model utilizes a variable methane generation potential (L˳) developed based on the dry decomposable organic carbon (DOCdry) historically deposited at the landfill. The variable L˳ reflects the historical changes in waste composition, recycling, and disposal strategies. Degradability and moisture content of each waste component, as well as several other factors relating to climate, landfill design and operation procedures, define the ultimate bioavailability of the total deposited DOC and ultimately the historical and future projection of L˳ for each year throughout the landfill’s lifespan. We use the UBCiModel© to accurately estimate methane generation rates from landfills and to properly design landfill gas management, control and utilization systems.
Our Methane Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) services are designed to help clients effectively identify, assess, and repair methane emissions from landfills.
We can provide a summary of current and projected methane emissions at the landfill to determine if the landfill is regulated or will be regulated in the future.
We offer compliance auditing services to assess whether a landfill gas collection and flaring system complies with the required codes, standards and permits. If a regulatory authority issues directives or mandates corrective measures, we can assist in developing and executing those corrective actions or engage in discussions with the regulatory body to determine the best course of action.
We create comprehensive safety plans for every facet of landfill gas flaring facilities. This encompasses blower and flare stations, air compressors, mechanical valves and piping, dryer and filter systems, and building methane monitoring systems. Our safety plans include identification of responsible parties, a process for hazard/risk assessment, standard operating procedures (SOPs), recommended personal protective equipment (PPE), procedures for health and safety meetings, procedures for reporting and investigating incidents, and emergency response plans.
Canada’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Offset Credit System encourages cost-effective GHG emission reductions from activities that are not covered by carbon pollution pricing and that go beyond legal requirements. We assist our clients to determine if a project may be eligible to register in Canada’s GHG Offset Credit System depending on location, baseline conditions, eligible project activities, eligible destruction devices, and project start date.

Field Services
Innovation meets execution in our Field Services. We use our patented Surface Scan Emission Quantification Technique (SSEQT) for unparalleled accuracy in quantifying methane emissions directly from the landfill surface. We are currently working on our Drone-Based SSEQT (DA-SSEQT) that will soon enable us to provide our GHG emission quantification services across Canada. Other services include site assessments, LFG system installation CQA, LFG systems wellfield balancing and monitoring as well as LFG blower flare facility operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Monitoring of LFG collection systems provides valuable information on the composition of the landfill gas being collected by the gas extraction system. Monitoring can be conducted at individual wellheads and/or at the flare station. Monitoring results provide gas composition for CH4, CO2, O2, and balance gas as well as temperature, pressure, and flow rate.
Leak Detetection and Repair (LDAR) programs can be implemented at landfills to identify and quantify methane leaks in landfill covers, at cover system penetration locations and from LFG recovery system infrastructure. Once leaks have been identified, corrective measures are undertaken to address leaks. We can perform LDAR on a regular basis (typically 1 to 4 times per year).
A Surface Emissions Monitoring (SEM) program consists of a walking survey along regularly-spaced transects across the landfill surface (typical spacing between 10 to 30 m) and measuring methane concentrations continuously using a handheld methane detector. Additional areas to be monitored include at surface penetrations, cracks, fissures, and in areas of stressed vegetation. SEM results can be reported as either instantaneous (ie. at a single location) or integrated concentrations (ie. concentrations are averages over a specified area).
We conduct maintenance on the mechanical and flare system in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and best practices.
Landfill gas wellheads require frequent adjustments to optimize the performance of the landfill gas collection system. Proper maintenance of the LFG wellfield can minimize leaks in the system and improve collection efficiency.
We offer quality assurance and quality control services to ensure quality in the construction of the landfill gas management system.
